He comes from a musical lineage, being the son of Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran, a member of the Cochin royal family. His playback career took off in 1967 with the song "Anuragaganam Pole" for the film Udhyogastha, and he has since recorded over 16,000 songs in various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.
